How a cabinets & countertops job runs, demo to final wipe-down
Builder-grade cabinet boxes in Middle Tennessee homes from the 1990s and 2000s are frequently better made than what would replace them at the same price. Where that is the case, refacing or refinishing is the honest recommendation and it costs a fraction of replacement.
Countertops are templated after the cabinets are installed, not before, which is why there is typically a week between the two. Anyone offering to template from drawings is fitting a top to a kitchen that does not exist yet.

FAQ
What homeowners ask about cabinets & countertops
Should countertops be templated before or after cabinets are installed?
After. Cabinets are never exactly where the drawing says, walls are never straight, and a countertop cut from the plan rather than the installed boxes shows a gap somewhere. Templating after installation adds a week or two to the schedule and removes the surprise.
Refacing or replacing kitchen cabinets?
Reface when the boxes are sound and you like the layout — new doors, drawer fronts and veneer for a fraction of new cabinets, with the kitchen usable throughout. Replace when the boxes are damaged, the layout does not work, or you want different storage. Refinishing is the third option and the cheapest of the three.
